Vanessa said she knew exactly what abortion was. She had already decided to go through with it. Then another woman pulled into the parking lot carrying a picture on her phone.
“I know what you’re going to say,” Vanessa told Andrew.
She had stepped out of a rideshare and walked directly toward the abortion facility. She did not avoid eye contact or slow down when Andrew approached her with a gift bag.
“I know abortion is killing a baby,” she continued. “I know it’s murder. I’m not confused about that.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“But my comfort matters more right now,” she said. “My life. My plans. I’m not ready. And I’m not going to ruin everything.”
There was no hesitation in her voice. She had made her decision.
Andrew told her that he and Justin were not there to argue. Her child was made in the image of God, he said, and what she was considering would take an innocent life. He also told her that mercy was available in Christ if she would turn.
Vanessa looked at the building, then at the men, and then back toward the door.
“I’ve already decided,” she said.
Andrew prayed quietly: “Lord, only You can break through a heart like this.”
Someone pulled into the parking lot
Before Vanessa could walk inside, a small sedan entered the lot. A woman rolled down her window and called to Andrew and Justin.
They recognized her as someone they had spoken with months earlier. She got out of the car holding her phone.
“I just had to come by,” she said. “You guys talked to my sister a while back—we came here.”
Andrew remembered her.
“She didn’t go through with it,” the woman continued. “She kept her baby.”
Then she turned her phone around.
The screen showed a newborn wrapped in a blanket. His eyes were closed, and his tiny hands were curled.
“She wanted me to thank you,” the woman said. “This is him.”
“He’s beautiful,” Justin said.
Vanessa had not intended to look, but she did.
The woman explained that her sister still talked about how close she had come to abortion. Now she could not imagine life without her son.
Vanessa kept looking at the picture.
She had already acknowledged what abortion was. The image did not give her new information. It showed her the life that an abortion would end: a child breathing, loved, and held in someone’s arms.
Andrew and Justin stopped talking. The picture was saying what they could not.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears. She blinked and muttered, “This is stupid.” But her voice cracked.
She looked toward the facility, then back at the phone.
“That baby…” she began.
“He almost wasn’t here,” the woman said.
“I can’t do this”
Vanessa’s certainty began to give way.
“I can’t,” she said.
“Can’t what?” Andrew asked.
Tears were falling now. “I can’t do this.”
She covered her face. “I was so sure,” she said. “I told you I knew what it was. I just didn’t care.”
Andrew answered her gently but clearly.
“God is merciful to those who turn from sin and trust Christ. Mercy can break in quickly.”
“I didn’t think I had any mercy coming to me,” Vanessa said.
She looked once more at the baby’s picture and then at the doors of the abortion facility.
“For my baby,” she said.
Vanessa stepped away from the entrance.
The woman holding the phone hugged her. “I’m so glad you saw him.”
“Me too,” Vanessa said.
Andrew offered her the gift bag again. This time, she accepted it.
“What do I do now?” she asked.
Justin answered, “Now we walk with you. And we help you. And we point you to Christ.”
One saved life helped save another
After Vanessa left, the parking lot returned to its normal rhythm. Cars came and went. Doors opened and closed.
Andrew remained still for a moment.
Vanessa had not changed her mind because someone supplied one more argument. She had already admitted the truth. What reached her was the sight of a child who had once been in danger at that same facility and was now alive.
A woman returned to share what had happened after her sister chose life. Vanessa saw the picture on her phone just before she was preparing to walk through the door.
One child’s life became a witness for another.
This is why stories from the sidewalk matter. A saved life is more than a result to report. It is a testimony that can strengthen missionaries, encourage those who support them, and show another mother what choosing life can mean.
For those who have already given to One Life For Life, the baby in that photograph is a reminder that the effects of faithful ministry do not always end when someone leaves the parking lot. Months later, the mercy shown to one family returned in the form of a picture, and God used it in another conversation.
For those considering a gift, your support helps missionaries remain present at abortion facilities, ready to speak the truth, offer practical help, and continue walking with women who choose life.
Andrew and Justin arrived that day prepared to speak. God also sent someone carrying a picture.
Vanessa looked at the child on the screen, stepped away from the entrance, and asked what came next.
“Now we walk with you,” Justin told her.
